Preservation Tree Ordinance
The City of Ojai has recognized oak, sycamore, heritage and other mature trees as significant historical and aesthetic ecological resources, therefore, the City of Ojai has adopted an ordinance that enforces best practices for these protected trees. It is important that the City and its community understand that the ordinance was designed to preserve the character of many areas of the City in which these trees live. Please review the ordinance here in its entirety if you will be working on publicly or privately owned protected tree species.
Tree Maintenance (In the Public Right of Way)
For any trees that are within the right of way, our Public Works Crew will address each inquiry at the time they receive it. Please report trees to the Public Works team if:
- The tree is lifting the sidewalk
- The tree has a fallen limb
- The tree appears to be diseased. We will request an arborist to take a look at the health of the tree
Please call 805-646-5581 ext 200 or submit the inquiry here.

Requesting Permission to Work on Privately Owned Trees
For any work on a tree that resides on private property, you will have to file a tree permit with the Community Development Department. Trees in or Around High Voltage Power Lines
The Public Works Department does not trim near power lines or communication lines. If you notice a tree near or around power lines, please contact Southern California Edison (SCE). It is a matter of public safety and the reliability of the power grid. California regulations require utilities to trim trees or vegetation so they don’t grow into or fall into high-voltage power lines, which could not only cause a power outage but also spark a fire or be a danger to the public.
